The cemetery went completely silent.
The father looked toward the coffin.
Then slowly at the people standing behind him.
“What exactly did my daughter tell you?”
The boy wiped his eyes.
“I found her near the old train bridge.”
The father shook his head.
“She was already in the hospital.”
“No,” the boy whispered. “She was scared. She said someone kept giving her medicine that made her sleep.”
A woman among the mourners suddenly looked away.
The boy noticed.
So did the father.
“She gave me this.”
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small silver bracelet.
The father’s breath caught.
He had fastened that bracelet around Emily’s wrist on her tenth birthday.
But the girl in the coffin was still wearing one too.
The father slowly looked down.
Two identical bracelets.
His hands began shaking.
The boy stepped closer to the coffin.
“She told me something else.”
The father barely managed to speak.
“What?”
The boy stared at the still girl’s face.
“Emily said if I came to her funeral…”
His lips trembled.
“…I should check whether the girl in the coffin had her scar.”
The father reached toward her wrist.
And stopped.
There was no half-moon scar.
