Adrian picked up the purse.
His wife rushed forward.
“Don’t.”
That single word made his hand stop.
Not because he planned to obey.
Because fear had finally replaced every excuse on her face.
His daughter stepped closer.
“I saw her filming the maid yesterday.”
The maid looked up sharply.
Adrian opened the purse.
Inside was the phone.
His wife was crying now.
“Please.”
He unlocked it with the code he had watched her use a thousand times.
The gallery opened.
Dozens of short videos.
Same maid.
Same house.
Different rooms.
In one, the maid was cleaning the dining room while the blonde woman stood behind the camera whispering insults.
In another, she deliberately knocked over a tray, then recorded only the aftermath.
In another, she told the maid to kneel and clean a spotless floor again because she had “missed a mark.”
Adrian’s breathing changed.
The maid covered her mouth.
His daughter looked at him.
“She was making it look like the maid was dangerous.”
Adrian stared at his wife.
“Why?”
She shook her head.
But his daughter already knew.
She opened another recording.
This one had been saved but never sent.
The blonde woman was speaking directly into the camera.
Calm.
Controlled.
Practicing.
“If anything happens to the baby, everyone will know who caused it.”
Adrian’s face collapsed.
He looked at the maid.
The maid had been blamed before.
Broken glass.
A bruised arm.
A stroller left too close to the stairs.
Small incidents Adrian had dismissed because his wife always had an explanation.
Now he understood.
She had been building a story.
Piece by piece.
A story where the maid was careless.
Unstable.
Dangerous.
His voice dropped.
“What were you preparing for?”
His wife said nothing.
The baby began crying softly from the stroller.
The maid immediately moved toward it.
The blonde woman flinched.
Adrian noticed.
So did his daughter.
Then the girl looked at her father.
“There’s one more video.”
Adrian turned to her.
She hesitated for the first time.
“I didn’t understand it.”
She opened the final clip.
It showed the blonde woman alone in the nursery late at night.
She was holding a document.
Reading it.
Then saying one sentence to someone off camera.
“If Adrian thinks the maid caused it, he’ll never question me.”
The recording ended.
Adrian’s face emptied.
His wife began shaking.
The maid stared at her.
The daughter slowly lowered the phone.
Nobody knew what “it” meant yet.
But Adrian finally understood the staircase had not been an accident.
And whatever his wife had been planning—
the maid had almost become the perfect person to blame.
