🎬 PART 2: «The Woman He Buried Was Still Alive»

He stared at his daughter.

“What did you say?”

Sophie immediately looked frightened.

Like she had already said too much.

The woman near the staircase set down her glass.

“Sophie is confused.”

The father ignored her.

He touched his daughter’s cheek.

“Baby, look at me.”

She did.

“What did she tell you about Mommy?”

Sophie’s breath shook.

“She said Mommy is alive.”

Silence filled the foyer.

His face emptied.

“No.”

Sophie nodded desperately.

“She showed me.”

The red-haired woman stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

The father stood.

Sophie clung to his coat around her shoulders.

His voice dropped.

“Showed her what?”

The woman said nothing.

Sophie reached inside the pocket of her apron.

Her tiny fingers pulled out a folded photograph.

She handed it to him.

He opened it.

And stopped breathing.

His wife.

Older than he remembered.

Thin.

Pale.

But alive.

She was sitting beside a window holding that day’s newspaper.

The photograph had been taken only two weeks earlier.

His knees nearly gave way.

“Where did you get this?”

Sophie pointed toward the woman.

“She dropped it.”

The father looked up.

Tears were already filling his eyes.

“You told me she died.”

The woman’s polished confidence finally disappeared.

“She was supposed to.”

His face changed.

Sophie pressed herself against his leg.

He immediately placed one protective hand over her head.

“What does that mean?”

The woman looked toward the doors.

Then back at him.

“She wanted to leave you.”

His voice cracked.

“So you made me believe she was dead?”

“She knew things that could destroy this family.”

He stared at her.

“This family?”

A broken laugh escaped him.

“You made my daughter kneel on the floor because she found out.”

The woman said nothing.

That silence answered him.

Sophie began crying again.

“Dad…”

He dropped immediately beside her.

“I’m here.”

“Mommy asked for me.”

His eyes widened.

“When?”

Sophie swallowed.

“Yesterday.”

The father froze.

“You spoke to her?”

Sophie nodded.

“She called the house.”

The woman closed her eyes.

And suddenly he understood why his daughter had been punished.

He looked toward her.

“You caught Sophie talking to her.”

The woman’s lips trembled.

“She wasn’t supposed to answer that phone.”

The father pulled Sophie into his arms.

His voice broke against her hair.

“Where is Mommy?”

Sophie whispered an address into his ear.

Then she started sobbing.

“She said she’s been waiting for you to find her.”

He held his daughter tighter, tears slipping down his face.

For three years, he had grieved a woman who was still breathing.

And the little girl everyone had forced onto her knees…

was the only person who could bring her mother home.
