Sarah stared at Daniel.
“Your what?”
Daniel couldn’t speak.
Mark wiped his eyes.
“Tell her.”
Daniel swallowed.
“He’s not my best friend.”
Sarah frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel looked at Mark.
“He’s my brother.”
Silence.
Sarah almost laughed from disbelief.
“You’ve known each other since college.”
“That’s what we told everyone.”
Mark reached into his jacket and placed an old photograph on the table.
Two little boys stood beside the same woman.
Sarah recognized Daniel immediately.
And beside him was Mark.
She looked up.
“You grew up together?”
Daniel shook his head.
“We were separated when we were kids.”
“Why?”
Mark’s voice cracked.
“Because our mother gave me away.”
Sarah stared at the phone.
“Then who was the woman on the voicemail?”
Neither man answered.
Sarah’s face changed.
“No…”
Daniel whispered,
“She’s our mother.”
Sarah leaned back.
“You told me your mother died.”
“I thought she did.”
Mark closed his eyes.
“Until last night.”
Sarah looked between them.
“What happened at her house?”
Daniel’s hands began trembling.
“She showed me documents.”
“What documents?”
Daniel looked at Mark.
Then back at Sarah.
“The reason Mark was taken away.”
Mark’s face went pale.
Sarah whispered,
“What reason?”
Daniel pushed the photograph toward him.
“Because she was trying to protect him.”
“From who?”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Our father.”
Mark stared at him.
“My father died before I was born.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Then he looked toward the restaurant entrance.
A gray-haired man had just walked inside.
Mark stopped breathing.
Daniel whispered,
“That’s another lie she told you.”
