The bride stared at Emily.
“What did you just say?”
Her husband stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.”
Emily shook her head.
“You still haven’t told her.”
“Told me what?”
Emily reached into her purse and pulled out a hospital envelope.
Her hands were trembling.
“I’m carrying an embryo created eight years ago.”
The bride looked confused.
Then she saw the name printed on the medical paperwork.
Her own.
She stopped breathing.
“That’s impossible.”
Years earlier, before cancer treatment, the bride had frozen embryos with her former fiancé.
She had been told they were destroyed after his death.
Emily’s voice broke.
“They weren’t.”
The groom suddenly grabbed for the papers.
The bride pulled them away.
“Why does my husband know about this?”
Emily looked at him.
“Because he paid the clinic to keep one.”
Silence spread through the reception.
The bride stared at the man she had married less than an hour earlier.
“You stole my embryo?”
He shook his head.
“I was trying to give you the family you thought you lost.”
Her eyes filled with horror.
“Without telling me?”
Emily began sobbing.
“He promised me you knew.”
The bride looked down at Emily’s stomach.
A child biologically connected to her was growing inside a stranger.
Then she noticed another name on the paperwork.
The listed biological father.
Her knees almost gave out.
Because it wasn’t her late fiancé.
She looked at her husband.
“Who is this?”
He couldn’t meet her eyes.
Emily whispered,
“That’s the part he was terrified I’d tell you.”
