“Having an affair.”

Rachel stared at her.

“What?”

Sophie shook her head desperately.

“That photo isn’t what you think.”

Tom closed his eyes.

Rachel pointed at the screen.

“He’s kissing you.”

Sophie’s voice broke.

“Because I’d just told him the truth.”

“What truth?”

Nobody spoke.

Rachel’s hands started trembling.

Then Sophie reached into her purse and pulled out an old envelope.

Inside was a photograph of three children.

Rachel recognized herself.

She recognized Sophie.

But between them stood a little boy.

Rachel looked confused.

“Who is that?”

Sophie began crying harder.

Tom finally whispered,

“Me.”

Rachel looked at him.

Then back at the photograph.

“No.”

Sophie nodded.

“Tom isn’t my lover.”

Her voice cracked.

“He’s our brother.”

Rachel nearly dropped the picture.

“That’s impossible.”

“Our father had another child before he married Mom.”

Rachel looked at Tom.

“You knew?”

“Not when we met.”

“When?”

Tom swallowed.

“Three weeks ago.”

Rachel stared at the birthday photo again.

Sophie whispered,

“I found the adoption records first. I panicked. He came over. I told him everything.”

“And the kiss?”

Tom looked ashamed.

“She kissed my cheek.”

Sophie shook her head.

“The photo caught the angle wrong.”

Rachel looked around the room.

“Then who put it on my television?”

Silence.

One guest near the back quietly lowered his phone.

Sophie’s face went pale.

Rachel noticed.

“Who is he?”

Sophie whispered,

“The person who never wanted you to know Tom was family.”
