Every head turned.
The grandmother looked directly at David’s godfather, Richard.
The fork slipped from his hand.
David stared at him.
“No.”
Richard couldn’t meet his eyes.
The daughter whispered,
“Grandma… what are you saying?”
Her grandmother was shaking.
“Richard is David’s biological father.”
David backed away from the table.
“You were my father’s best friend.”
Richard’s voice cracked.
“I was.”
“And you watched him raise me?”
“I didn’t know at first.”
David looked at his mother.
“You lied to both of us?”
She covered her face.
“One night. Your father and I had separated. I thought our marriage was over.”
David laughed once in disbelief.
“So Uncle Mark and I…”
“Only share a mother,” she whispered.
The daughter grabbed the DNA report.
“Then why did Uncle Mark match me at 98.9 percent?”
Nobody answered.
She looked at Richard.
Then at her father.
Then back at the report.
“That percentage is too high for an uncle.”
Richard’s face changed.
David noticed.
“What aren’t you telling us?”
The grandmother began crying harder.
Richard finally stood.
“Because Mark isn’t just your half-brother.”
David froze.
“What does that mean?”
Richard looked toward Mark.
Mark’s chair scraped backward.
The daughter whispered,
“Oh my God…”
Richard swallowed.
“Your mother wasn’t the only person keeping a secret.”
David stared at his brother.
“Mark?”
Mark’s eyes filled.
Then he whispered,
“David… Richard is my father too.”
