“Brother.”
Daniel’s hand fell from his uncle’s jacket.
“My father doesn’t have a brother.”
His mother stopped crying.
The uncle looked at her.
“She knows.”
Daniel slowly turned.
“Mom?”
She couldn’t meet his eyes.
“Your father had a twin.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me he was an only child.”
“That’s what he wanted you to believe.”
Rain ran down her face as she looked at the empty coffin.
“His brother disappeared twenty-six years ago.”
Daniel held up the phone.
“So the man I saw this morning…”
His uncle shook his head.
“That was your father.”
“Then where’s his twin?”
Nobody answered.
Daniel’s mother suddenly looked toward the grave.
Her breathing changed.
“No…”
She grabbed the funeral director.
“Whose body was supposed to be in that coffin?”
He stepped back.
“I was told not to open it.”
“By who?”
The uncle whispered,
“Your husband.”
Daniel looked at him.
“My dad arranged his own funeral?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
The uncle pulled a soaked envelope from inside his coat.
“Because three days ago, his twin came back.”
Daniel froze.
His mother whispered,
“That’s impossible.”
The uncle handed her a photograph.
Two identical men stood outside the family home.
The timestamp was from the previous night.
Daniel stared at it.
“One of them is Dad.”
His mother nodded.
Daniel pointed to the other man.
“Then who’s that?”
Before anyone answered, a car engine started beyond the cemetery gates.
Daniel looked up.
The same car from his video was pulling away.
His uncle went pale.
“Daniel…”
“What?”
“That isn’t your father driving.”
Daniel stared after the car.
“Then who is?”
His uncle whispered,
“The man your father has spent twenty-six years hiding from you.”
