The man stared at her.
“That’s impossible.”
The girl pushed open the door.
Inside, a child was crying somewhere upstairs.
Then came a voice.
“Dad…”
The man nearly collapsed.
He knew that voice.
His missing son.
He rushed toward the stairs.
But another boy stepped out of the shadows.
Same eyes.
Same hair.
Almost the same face.
The man froze.
The second child stared at the missing poster in his hand.
Then whispered,
“You finally came.”
The father’s voice broke.
“Who are you?”
Before the boy could answer, a woman appeared at the top of the stairs.
The man went completely still.
It was his former wife.
The woman he had been told died years earlier.
She looked terrified.
“You weren’t supposed to find them yet.”
“Them?”
His missing son came running from behind her.
“Dad!”
The man pulled him into his arms.
Then looked at the second boy.
His former wife began crying.
“You knew about one son.”
She looked at the other child.
“But you never knew I was carrying twins.”
The father stared at her.
“Why take one of them from me?”
She shook her head.
“I didn’t.”
Her eyes shifted toward the little girl who had led him there.
“She found them both.”
The father frowned.
“Who?”
The girl’s face went pale.
Then she whispered,
“My mother.”
A door slammed somewhere behind them.
The girl grabbed his sleeve.
“And she’s the reason your son disappeared.”
