The officer’s face went pale.
“What are you talking about?”
The federal agent closed his suitcase.
“I didn’t come here to catch a flight.”
Two travelers standing nearby suddenly removed their jackets.
Badges.
Then another agent stepped out from behind the security desk.
The officer backed away.
“You set me up.”
The older man shook his head.
“No.”
“You set yourself up.”
The airport noise seemed to disappear around them.
The agent pointed toward the security camera.
“We’ve been watching this checkpoint for six weeks.”
The officer swallowed.
“I’ve never done this before.”
The agent’s expression hardened.
“Then how did you know exactly where to hide it?”
Silence.
One of the other agents placed a tablet on the counter.
Video after video appeared.
Different passengers.
Same officer.
Same movement.
Same planted evidence.
The security officer’s legs nearly gave out.
Then the older agent opened one final file.
A photograph appeared.
A frightened teenage boy being led away in handcuffs.
The officer looked away.
The agent’s voice changed.
“That boy spent eight months in detention because of you.”
The officer whispered,
“I was following orders.”
The agent stepped closer.
“Whose orders?”
For the first time, the officer looked genuinely terrified.
His eyes shifted toward the security director’s office.
Then he whispered,
“You don’t understand.”
The agent followed his stare.
“No.”
His voice dropped.
“But I think I’m about to.”
