Grace stopped breathing.
“What did you say?”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“There was an accident.”
She shook her head violently.
“No. You sent them to boarding school.”
Nathan stared at her.
“I never sent them anywhere.”
The woman in blue stepped between them.
“Grace, maybe we should—”
One of the girls suddenly pointed at her.
“That’s the lady.”
Everyone froze.
Nathan looked down.
“What lady?”
The oldest girl grabbed Grace’s hand.
“She used to visit us.”
The woman in blue went pale.
Grace turned toward her.
“What is she talking about?”
The girl continued.
“She said Daddy didn’t want us anymore.”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“I never knew you were alive.”
The woman in blue backed away.
Then Grace reached into one daughter’s schoolbag and pulled out a folded envelope.
“I found this before we came.”
She handed it to Nathan.
Inside were three forged death certificates.
All signed by the same witness.
The woman standing beside him.
Nathan slowly raised his eyes.
“You told me my children were dead.”
She began shaking.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
Grace pulled her daughters close.
Nathan’s voice dropped.
“Then tell me what was supposed to happen.”
The woman looked at the three girls.
And finally whispered,
“They were supposed to stay hidden until Grace signed everything over to me.”
